In today s culture, electricity is a vital part of functioning as a society. Simple tasks, such as waking up at a designated time or enjoying a piece of music, are accomplished currently via electronic means. One only needs to consider the consequences of a relatively short power outage Ââ€" factories close down, phones and computers go dead, traffic slows to a crawl, food spoils in refrigerators Ââ€" to accurately observe how power-dependent our society has become. However, electricity is a constantly developing technology, and the aspects one currently associates with electricity and electricity generation are nowhere close to the original features. Electricity is no longer a luxury, it is a definite necessity. The next major factor to affect the evolution of electricity was the establishment of the Tennessee Valley Authority and the inception of the Rural Electrification Administration. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who entered office in the midst of the Great Depression, realized the great benefits that government-regulated electricity generation could provide for a floundering economy. He took steps to alleviate the plight of the farmers and the unemployed by promoting the controversial idea of federally-owned power. In 1933, he signed into action the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), whose purpose was to provide electric power at a low, stable rate and promote agricultural and industrial development in the Tennessee Valley region (Greatest Engineering, 2006). The economic results in the region were substantial. Electric lights and modern appliances made life easier and farms more productive.
